Fancy Hoola Hooping in to 2021?

Oh, it’s a cliché isn’t it, new year and the resolutions kick in. But without them, sometimes things just don’t get off the ground.  The big one is usually a change in fitness habits. Currently I’m resting from my usual exercise regime due to being 7 months pregnant. However, as soon as I can get back to it, I plan to try some new things with fitness.

Recently, I have come across something I have heard of but wasn’t aware it was so beneficial and on my doorstep (namely in the form of online classes)! I’m talking about hoola hooping! I had one as a child and it was brilliant fun, but now it’s a form of fitness. Targeting your waist and it’s not easy so generally a challenge and fun. So, if running isn’t your bag, this may appeal.

I’ve recently met Sasha, owner and hoola expert at Hoola Nation. Her studio is in Wrexham but due to Covid, is now online for the time being. I’m going to have to wait until April to try it but I’m very excited about this. I asked Sasha about the hoops – I thought there was just one type, but I was very wrong.

Sasha told me, “We would not recommend the "massage" aided hoola hoops as they might be damaging to your body tissue (so soon after giving birth).  Smooth hoops, up to 1.2 kg are recommended. In terms of hooping post pregnancy.... It is an excellent way to get back into it, but it is important that you get a go ahead for exercise from the GP before you start.”

As someone who’s been on a huge fitness journey, I would say it’s not always about weight loss but about being strong and healthy. But whatever you want to achieve, you should go for it 100%.

My own fitness included jogging, hiit, weightlifting and spells of yoga. Each one would give me a different shape if I focused on it exclusively. I found that quite difficult to cope with in the early days (I only started properly getting fit in 2014), because of all the images on Instagram of ‘fit’ people. However, I’ve now learnt that fitness/health has a different meaning for everyone, so just do what is right for you.

I can’t wait to hoola hoop though and I’ll be adding some photos on the Instagram @vjmactive page when I can give that a go!
